Both Myplace and Turnitin have to convert student submissions into a format that they can use to present their various tools: the online annotation function in Myplace assignments, and the originality report & document viewer for Turnitin.
In both these cases, the conversion cannot be guaranteed to be identical, as they can't use the exact same software that the student may have used to do this conversion.
If exact consistent reproduction formats such as Word's DOCX should be avoided, as these are interpreted by Word, instead a format such as PDF, which has a much higher guarantee of reproduction should be used for submissions, and as a result has a much more consistent conversion.
The file that is uploaded by the student is the canonical version of their submission, so should be referenced if there are any idiosyncrasies, but again different tools being used can result in differences in the presentation (for instance there are sometimes differences when viewing the same Word document using Windows version of Word versus the Mac version of Word).
