If you are travelling, away on placement, or just live outside the city centre, it may be more convenient to visit another university's library for study space than to come on campus and use the Andersonian Library.
There is a local reciprocal scheme amongst Glasgow-region universities that allows students from these universities to visit each other's libraries just by showing their student ID cards. The universities in this scheme are:
- University of Strathclyde
- University of Glasgow (note Glasgow often suspends this access during exam periods due to limited space)
- Glasgow Caledonian University
- University of the West of Scotland
- Glasgow School of Art
- Royal Conservatoire of Scotland
For most other UK-wide universities (full list), you can arrange access to their libraries through the SCONUL Access scheme, though this must be arranged in advance.
Apply for the SCONUL Access scheme through their online application form. Try to do so at least a week in advance of your planned visit to the other library.
Once your application is processed, you'll receive a SCONUL letter to take to the other university library you can use to get a library card there. Most libraries will also ask for some photo ID and some proof of your home address (e.g. a driving license, or a utility bill) when getting your card.
Once you have your SCONUL letter, it can also be re-used for visits to other SCONUL member libraries until the expiration date on the letter.
