There are a number of "locks" in Moodle that control whether or not students can ultimately see their grades for an activity.
Some of these locks will depend on the type of activity that is being used, and some of them apply to most activity types.
There is a reasonably complicated relationship between all of the locks on grade visibility in Moodle, for more information on all of this is available on our support pages at https://support.myplace.strath.ac.uk/display/MS/Visibility
Check list
This is a quick check list to ensure students can see their grades:
- Check Gradebook Visibility settings (Course Admin Menu > Edit Settings > Appearance > Show Gradebook to Students = Yes).
- Check the activity visibility (Activity > Edit Settings > Common Module Settings > Availability = Show on Course Page / Make available but not shown on course page).
- Check assignment blind marking state (Blind Identities should be revealed).
- Check assignment marking workflow states (Assignment Grading Table > All Submissions should indicated "Released").
- Check student satisfies any Restrict Access conditions (Activity > Edit Settings > Restrict Access).
- Check the activity's Grade Item is visible (Gradebook Set Up > Grade Item Edit Menu = Should display "Hide" / Item should not appear greyed out).
- Check the individual student's grade item is visible
Common Locks
These locks apply to most activity types:
Restrict Access conditions
Restrict access conditions control if a student can see an activity at all. If an activity is not available to a student then they are not expected to receive a grade for it, so typically would not appear within the activity.
Note: Students may meet the criteria later on, so this is a dynamic condition based on student information.
Gradebook Visibility
This is a course level setting that controls whether or not the students can see the gradebook itself. If disabled the students will not be able to see their grades in the gradebook, but they may be able to see their grades within the individual activities. The visibility of grades within activities is controlled by the Gradebook Grade Item Visibility.
Gradebook Grade Item Visibility
A grade item represents the grade information that relates to a Myplace activity, it defines the type of score and range that can be awarded for an activity.
If this is hidden the students cannot see their grade for that activity in the gradebook or in the activity itself.
Gradebook Grade visibility
A Gradebook Grade is an individual student's grade within the gradebook. Individual student's grades can be shown or hidden.
Assignment Activity
Blind Marking
If an as Assignment is still in Blind Marking, this means that the grades themselves are not released yet from the Assignment Activity to the grade book and this also suppresses the display of the grades (although not the feedback).
On Myplace you can typically identify if an assignment is still in blind marking as a blue information banner appears, otherwise look for the "Reveal Identities" option in the Grading Action menu.
To release blind marking using the "Reveal Identities" option either from the Grading Action menu (see above) or from the assignment's admin menu.
